The Exciting Science & Economics of Boring Potato Chips

I love potato chips. I just hate that the bags come with more air than actual chip. What is the air-to-chip ratio in a typical single-serving bag of chips anyway? And just how much money are we spending on air per bag? That’s what I set out to investigate this weekend. Put on your dork hats. Let’s go!

Sampling

I didn’t want my wife to kill me, so I thought 15 bags of chips would be a reasonable sample size. I went to the store, grabbed 15 random brands of chips. By the time I got home, I had eaten 1, so I was down to a total sample of 14 bags. Each bag is single serving. It was a mix of potato chips and corn chips. Here’s what I got, in no particular order:

Kettle Brand
Lays Classic Chips
Sun Chips
Lays Baked Chips (salt & vinegar flavor, mmmm)
Popchips
Flaming Cheetos
Terra Chips
Frito’s Corn Chips
Doritos Original
Tostitos Scoops
Pringles Original
Cape Cod
Ruffles Original
Stacy’s Pita Chips
